Canon surprises their users again. Today Canon launches Canon 50D earlier instead of more anticipated full frame Canon 5D successor, the 5D mkII.
Off course, this camera will be more likely to have all the features from 40D plus some enhancements.
Canon 50D vs Canon 40D
DIGIC IV processor is a step up from Digic III. This processor ensures even faster capturing and image processing. We can expect slightly improvement on Auto focus which are already fast when combined with Canon USM (ultra sonic motor) lenses.
15.1 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor
Users are not only get five extra megapixels, but Canon claims that this new sensor handles better noise. As a result, now the iso range is expanded to 100-3200 and can be boosted to: H1: 6400 and H2: 12800. However, image quality will drop significantly in iso 6400 and 12800 is not usable due to high red spot artefacts.
Improved Live Mode with face detection
This new feature will most likely benefit users who likes to take group picture in live view mode. Face detection will ensure faces are correctly exposed in auto mode.
Improved LCD Monitor pixel counts
3.0-inch Clear View LCD (920,000 dots/VGA) with multiple coatings for improved viewing and smudge-resistant protection, compared with only 230,000 dots. The playback mode will be a lot more accurate and enjoyable to watch. The body and control of the camera is identical with the Canon 40D.
6.3 fps continuous shoots
This 6.3 fps continuous shoots is not better than Canon 40D, but considered an achievement since the image size are now 50% bigger (15 megapixels vs 10 megapixels).
Canon 50D vs Nikon D300
Canon 50D is definitely a respond to Nikon D300. The Nikon’s previously has advantage in high ISO range of 100-3200, boost able to 12800 and 51 selective Auto Focus points that is slightly faster in dim light than 40D. But this new 50D responds it by improving the noise handling and match the D300’s ISO range.
(The comparison between Nikon D300 and Canon 40D is here)
Canon 50D will be priced approximately US$1400 body only and will be available with either with 28-135mm IS USM or 17-85mm IS USM kit lenses. Canon 50D released news statement
This camera will be $400 more expensive compared Canon 40D, and it will be approximately $200 less expensive than Nikon D300.
If you have 30D and 40D is it worth the upgrade? I will say if you are satisfied with 40D performance and body control, keep the 40D. For users from Rebel series, this camera provides a lot of improvements, but it will be $800-1000 more expensive.
With its premium price range, this camera is strongly geared for professional/semi pro especially for sport/action shooters.
Along with this camera, Canon will also released New EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens. Even this lens will not work on full frame camera, but it is a nice respond on the famous Nikon 18-200mm.
New photography enthusiasts will be confused once again to decide whether to go for Nikon D300 or 50D.Related Post:
