Olympus released three cameras in 2008, E-420, E-520 and E-3 These cameras replaced the E-410, E-510 and E-1. Comparing E-520 and E-420 is quite simple, because both cameras share many similar features: 10 Megapixels, 2.7″ lcd screen, Four-Thirds mount, 3 auto focus points, and compact size.

Olympus dslr cameras are engineered for first time digital slr camera users in mind. It features a live view mode, face detection and up to 24 scene mode selections.

But there are some notable differences:
Olympus E420 is designed for users that demanded ultra portable dslr camera. The small sensor Four third system are used for this camera advantage. It is smaller than other entry level cameras in the market.

To enhance the portability, Olympus introduces Olympus 25mm f/2.8 zuiko pan cake lens. This lens is very thin. Combined with E-420 (available to buy as a kit lens in discounted price), users can easily put their camera in a jacket/coat pocket.

The downside of this camera is lack of Image Stabilization option.

Even the camera grip is very good due to the textured grip, it might be too small for most of users hand. When this camera is mounted with a longer heavier lens, it might harder to balance it.

Olympus E520
This camera is definitely a general purpose dslr camera comparable with Canon XSi/450D, Sony A350, Nikon D80 and Pentax k10D.

Featurewise, E-520 has everything Olympus E-420 has plus Built in Image Stabilization. This feature are so crucial for photographers who faced low light condition or telephoto zoom users

The advantage of E-520 is the option to buy a twin kit lens (14-42mm and 40-150mm), The downside of E-520 is it doesn’t have option to buy Olympus 25mm pancake lens in a bundle like E-420.

Body and Control
Olympus E-520 is slightly bigger because of the built in IS on the body, and also has ear for the grip. It is slightly (30g) heavier.

It has much better controls because many dedicated buttons on the camera including ISO button which let the users change their setting easier and faster, while in E-420, users have to press several buttons in the menu to change the setting.

In Conclusion
If you are looking for all-around general purpose camera, Olympus E-520 is the best choice. If you are looking for ultra portable dslr camera that can fit in your big pocket, then Olympus E-420 with 25mm pancake lens is the one.
