Learned couple things from Orientation Week I

Last week is new student orientation week. I have a photo assignment to cover the event. This event is called Play Fair. It is event for new students to have fun and meet new people.

Some equipments that I use and carry for this event:
1. Canon 40D with Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM
2. Canon Rebel XSi / 450D with Canon EF 70-200mm F/4 IS USM
3. 2 spare batteries for 40D and total of 7 GB memory cards.

When I arrived on the scene, I saw beautiful sunset behind the Rooke Chapel, where the students are in matriculation ceremony. So I took several shots hand held with IS lens and high ISO (1600). The pictures turn out pretty sharp.

The main challenge to take this picture and the rest of the pictures is to find a correct exposure. Using automatic evaluative metering from camera will over expose the sky. So there are two ways to deal with it, either manual setting on the shutter speed by trial and error or set exposure compensation.

Because I arrive 45 minutes early. I have time, I try to increase the shutter speed 1/3 stop at the time. So it is nice if you arrive early, especially if you have important assignment.

As I move closer to the Chapel, I saw transparent windows which you can see students inside. I think this is a good photo opportunity. This framing technique is usually called "Picture inside the picture." So I take another picture. I also take picture of individual window.

For this picture, I try to set aperture up to 16 to get all face in focus. I also try to fill in the frame with faces. I purposely include the programmer (the guy on the dark shirt) on the foreground. He is blurry because of the depth of field.

Again, exposure compensation or manual setting need to be adjusted for this shot because if not, then the image will be over exposed due to the large dark area (the sky). Spot metering can be used. But I feel it is too risky because the subject is moving and it is hard to correctly point on particular subject to get correct metering of the scene.

I hope this is helpful and comments or critiques are appreciated.

Nikon D90 vs Canon 40D

Recently, Nikon released D90. This powerful mid range digital camera is priced $999, and will be competing with Canon's popular camera, 40D.

Along with D90, Nikon also release a new general purpose kit lens 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 VR

Nikon D90 has some advantages over Canon 40D such as:
  • 2 extra megapixels
  • High resolution 3" inch screen 920,000 dots vs 230,000 dots
  • Ability to record movie at 24fps with sound.
  • Face detection on Live View Mode
  • ISO range up to 3200, boostable to 6400 (Canon 40D max ISO is 3200)
  • 11 points AF compare to 9 points AF.

Canon 40D is still leading in some areas:
  • Magnesium Alloy body is stronger and tougher with environmental seal
  • 6.5 fps compare to Nikon's 4.5 fps.

Conclusions:
Nikon D90 is a better camera compare to Canon 40D, in many areas especially usable iso up to 3200 (1 stop advantage). Ability to record movie is a very nice addition to slr camera's capability. I will highly recommended this camera especially for reporter or casual family events shooters. For sports shooter and outdoor lovers, 40D might be the better choice because of higher burst speed and better environmental protection.

Canon launches Canon 50D - How it compares to 40D

Canon surprises their users again. Today Canon launches Canon 50D instead of more anticipated full frame Canon 5D successor, the 5D mkII.

Off course, this camera will be more likely to have all the features from 40D plus some enhancements.

Canon 50D vs Canon 40D

DIGIC IV processor is a step up from Digic III. This processor ensures even faster capturing and image processing. We can expect slightly improvement on Auto focus which are already fast when combined with Canon USM (ultra sonic motor) lenses.

15.1 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor
Users are not only get five extra megapixels, but Canon claims that this new sensor handles better noise. As a result, now the iso range is expanded to 100-3200 and can be boosted to: H1: 6400 and H2: 12800. However, image quality will drop significantly in iso 6400 and 12800 is not usable due to high red spot artefacts.

Improved Live Mode with face detection
This new feature will most likely benefit users who likes to take group picture in live view mode. Face detection will ensure faces are correctly exposed in auto mode.

Improved LCD Monitor pixel counts
3.0-inch Clear View LCD (920,000 dots/VGA) with multiple coatings for improved viewing and smudge-resistant protection, compared with only 230,000 dots. The playback mode will be a lot more accurate and enjoyable to watch. The body and control of the camera is identical with the Canon 40D.

6.3 fps continuous shoots
This 6.3 fps continuous shoots is not better than Canon 40D, but considered an achievement since the image size are now 50% bigger (15 megapixels vs 10 megapixels).

Competition:

Canon 50D vs Nikon D300
Canon 50D is definitely a respond to Nikon D300. The Nikon's previously has advantage in high ISO range of 100-3200, boostable to 12800 and 51 selective Auto Focus points that is slightly faster in dim light than 40D. But this new 50D responds it by improving the noise handling and match the D300's ISO range.

(The comparison between Nikon D300 and Canon 40D is here)

Canon 50D will be priced approximately US$1400 body only and will be available with either with 28-135mm IS USM or 17-85mm IS USM kit lenses. Canon 50D released news statement

This camera will be $400 more expensive compared Canon 40D, and it will be approximately $200 less expensive than Nikon D300.

If you have 30D and 40D is it worth the upgrade? I will say if you are satisfied with 40D performance and body control, keep the 40D. For users from Rebel series, this camera provides a lot of improvements, but it will be $800-1000 more expensive.

With its premium price range, this camera is strongly geared for professional/semi pro especially for sport/action shooters.

Along with this camera, Canon will also released New EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens. Even this lens will not work on full frame camera, but it is a nice respond on the famous Nikon 18-200mm.

New photography enthusiasts will be confused once again to decide whether to go for Nikon D300 or 50D.

Tilting the camera

By tilting your camera in the right angle or rotating it on image editing sofware, a regular photo could be more interesting.

Here are some samples:

Without the tilting, image above will be more boring.

In this picture, I tilted the camera a bit. The result is the photos become more dramatic. I also set a slow shutter speed to capture motion.

Olympus E-520 vs Olympus E-420

Olympus released three cameras in 2008, E-420, E-520 and E-3 These cameras replaced the E-410, E-510 and E-1. Comparing E-520 and E-420 is quite simple, because both cameras share many similar features: 10 Megapixels, 2.7" lcd screen, Four-Thirds mount, 3 auto focus points, and compact size.

Olympus dslr cameras are engineered for first time digital slr camera users in mind. It features a live view mode, face detection and up to 24 scene mode selections.

But there are some notable differences:

Olympus E420 is designed for users that demanded ultra portable dslr camera. The small sensor Four third system are used for this camera advantage. It is smaller than other entry level cameras in the market.

To enhance the portability, Olympus introduces Olympus 25mm f/2.8 zuiko pan cake lens. This lens is very thin. Combined with E-420 (available to buy as a kit lens in discounted price), users can easily put their camera in a jacket/coat pocket.

The downside of this camera is lack of Image Stabilization option.

Even the camera grip is very good due to the textured grip, it might be too small for most of users hand. When this camera is mounted with a longer heavier lens, it might harder to balance it.

Olympus E520
This camera is definitely a general purpose dslr camera comparable with Canon XSi/450D, Sony A350, Nikon D80 and Pentax k10D.

Featurewise, E-520 has everything Olympus E-420 has plus Built in Image Stabilization. This feature are so crucial for photographers who faced low light condition or telephoto zoom users

The advantage of E-520 is the option to buy a twin kit lens (14-42mm and 40-150mm), The downside of E-520 is it doesn't have option to buy Olympus 25mm pancake lens in a bundle like E-420.

Body and Control
Olympus E-520 is slightly bigger because of the built in IS on the body, and also has ear for the grip. It is slightly (30g) heavier.

It has much better controls because many dedicated buttons on the camera including ISO button which let the users change their setting easier and faster, while in E-420, users have to press several buttons in the menu to change the setting.

In Conclusion
If you are looking for all-around general purpose camera, Olympus E-520 is the best choice. If you are looking for ultra portable dslr camera that can fit in your big pocket, then Olympus E-420 with 25mm pancake lens is the one.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 vs G9 and P6000

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 is one of high quality advance digital compact camera that compete directly to the giant brands Canon G9 and Nikon P6000. They share many similarities, from the price point of US$500, full manual control, identical size, stabilized lens (called Mega OIS).

This camera has different strategy than Canon and Nikon's. Instead of increasing the megapixel counts, this camera strives to increase the quality of its 10 megapixel, and it works amazingly especially in high ISO level.

There are several differences
  • Panasonic LX3 only sports 10 megapixel, whereas Nikon and Canon has more megapixel. But LX3 sensor has been improved significantly. 40% in sensitivity and 35% in color saturation.
  • Panasonic lens max aperture f/2 is almost one stop faster than Canon or Nikon. Means excellent performance in low light.
  • Similar with Canon G9, Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 has 3" lcd screen, P6000 has 2.7"
  • High quality Leica Lens but focal length is sacrificed. the focal length span from 24mm to 60mm only. while Nikon has 28-112mm mm and Canon 35mm to 210mm
  • Ability to change aspect ratio of pictures 3:2, 4:3, 16:9 means better creative control.
In conclusion
This LX3 delivers very good image quality and engineered to handle low light shooting which is the main problem of many digital compact camera. To keep the 10 megapixel but improve the sensitivities is an unconventional but a very good strategy.

The trade off is the focal length of the lens. Because it is short, it is ideal only for wide group pictures, landscape, and macro photography. the Canon 210mm is suitable more for telephoto zoom for sports or wildlife and Nikon 18-112mm might be the most versatile of those two.

I will highly recommend this camera for users who is more into low light photography such as night scene, indoor shots and landscape.

Nikon D60 vs Canon XTi / 400D

Nikon D60 is an upgrade of Nikon D40 and have the similar price point of Canon XTi or 400D. D60 features 10 megapixel, an upgrade from 6 megapixel, option for VR stabilized 18-55mm kit lens.

Body and Control
Although ergonomic is decided by the individual users, but many argue that Nikon's entry level cameras, the D40 and D60 are better than Canon entry level such as Canon 400D / XTi. The feel of Nikon D60 is arguable more solid and rugged.

In term of control, both are equally good. Both of cameras have accessible buttons and thumb dial. Both cameras also features the same size 2.5" lcd screen.

Lens selections and compatibility
Unlike Canon XTi, Nikon D60 only compatible with newer Nikon AF-S lenses whereas Canon XTi is compatible with all EOS lenses. Users won't feel its limitation if they does not plan to use fast prime lenses.

Note: Users of Nikon D40 and D60 can still use older AF lenses but the Auto Focus won't work.

General Features comparison

Nikon D60's advantages
1. Spot metering
2. 30% faster Auto Focus due to newer EXPEED vs DIGIC II processor.
3. Option of two VR lens kit at discounted price
4. ISO can be boost up to 3200
5. 30-50% better noise handling

Canon XTi's advantages
1. 11 points auto focus vs 3 points (easier to use for creative shots).
2. Wider Lens selection and compatibility

Conclusion:
Nikon D60 has many advantages compare to Canon 400D / XTi, especially in processor speed and AF speed in low light. D60's noise handling is superior than XTi which is useful to shoot action in dim light or where you can't use flash.

Limitation of lens selection especially Nikon prime lenses is an important issue to consider especially if you are serious about photography. Prime lenses are very useful for artistic shoots and low light action photo shoots due to their ability to produce sharp image and shallow depth of field. Check out my article about prime lenses here.

It is also important to try the camera on the store, especially for the grip and body control. This is very significant especially if you want to use the camera for a long time.

Final Verdict
I will suggest you to get Canon XTi when the extreme speed is not that important and you like are more likely to use the camera for artistic purpose (because it has access to prime lenses). And get Nikon D60 when you want a faster and more responsive camera with great ability in low light condition (due to better ISO and VR).

When to use flash?

Here are four excellent questions from user tobywuk from Camera Labs forum

How to avoid harsh tone light on subject when using flash?
  • You can solve the problem with setting down flash exposure compensation for example -1 or -2.
  • If you are taking picture indoor with ceiling, you can aim your flash to ceiling and the ceiling will distribute the light around the room.
  • The other way is to get a flash diffuser such as omni bounce, light sphere, lumiquest promax system, demb diffuser or a bounce card.
Are flashes a good way of shooting in dark situations, such as people in the night or in dark buildings?

if you care about the entire frame including background, it is better to take picture without flash, because flash does not have power to light up the entire scene (unless you have very elaborate lighting system).

If you need to use flash to light up subjects such as objects, you can do that, but I suggest you to slower the shutter speed one to two stop, so we can still see the background.

When shooting photo's of models, why do they always have flashes being used? Why use multiple flashes?

yes, because each flash has a purpose
1. for main light (the strongest, usually covering the entire object)
2. for fill light (to fill in / lighten shadow area)
3. back light for hair and/or background

Indoor, they almost use flash because they are simply not enough light
and general rule of thumb of achieving high quality detailed shot is to shoot in iso 100 or lowest iso your camera has.

Outdoor, flash is used for fill flash (you have watch the Gordon's tutorial)
and then also for catch light (sparkle in the eyes) to make the subject more lively / contrast.

Using filter gel on the flash/strobes and playing with white balance setting could create an interesting color balance and creative photos.

Are external flashes much better and worth spending the money on compared to the built in camera flash?

Yes, because external flashes are:More powerful, positioned relatively higher (so it does not interfere with longer lens). Higher position usually create a more soft shadow.

You can direct the light because you can swivel it. (30, 60 or 90 degree). Old trick indoor is to direct the flash to the ceiling and let it bounce and diffuse the light to entire room.
Last, Higher end flash is fully customizable and can set as slave mode. you can build a portrait studio out of multiple flashes with diffusers (umbrellas).

Short Review - Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM

Following the success of Sigma 30mm f/1.4, Sigma launches 50mm f/1.4. It is Sigma premium prime lens ($475 street) The build quality of this lens is very sturdy.

Mounted in Canon Rebel XSi / 450D, the lens body texture is very pleasant to grip. It is heavier than other prime lenses but it is not a big issue. The lens cap from Sigma has a similar built quality like the lens body. Unfortunately the lens front and rear cap are made from cheap plastic and quite flimsy.

The manual focus bar is wide, smooth and anti creep. Overall this lens has an excellent body construction, up to par with pro grade lens.

Due to the big aperture, the lens are wider than other prime lens, this is helpful for people with average to big hand.

Auto focus operation is fast and quiet due to Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM). But in low light situation such as sunset or dark skin tone, this lens auto focus have problem to lock in the target.

Image Quality
I took several snap shot today to test this lens wide open, the result is impressive. The result is good contrast, and very smooth bokeh or blur due to shallow depth of field. Chromatic Aberration is minimal even in aperture wide open.

What is this lens are for?
Mounted in small sensor camera (Canon Rebels, X0D series, Nikon D40 up to D300, Sony and Pentax digital slr cameras), this lens is equivalent to 80mm (medium telephoto). This focal length and big aperture is ideal for portrait. Other purpose will be low light condition such as indoor sports or art performance.

In Sony or Pentax body, this lens will gain advantage of the image stabilization which gain 1-2 stops than Nikon or Canon cameras.

The lens will come with a lens box to store lens when it is not in use. Extra cushion is provided to absorb shock.

Personal rating:
Image Quality : Excellent 5/5
Build Quality : Excellent 5/5
Price value: 3/5

Olympus E-520 vs Canon XSi

Olympus E-520 is Olympus Mid-range digital slr camera. At $600 price point. Olympus E-520 have a formidable opponent, Canon Rebel XSi or Canon 450D. Previously Canon XSi is priced around $700 body only but the price drops to $600. This move put Olympus E-520 into a big disadvantage. I predict that Olympus E-520 might drop their price to respond.

XSi advantages
  • Bigger sensor, better noise handling
  • 9 points auto focus. Center point is cross type sensor (extremely fast and accurate) compare to 3 points auto focus.
  • 3" LCD screen compare to 2.7"
  • 2 extra megapixel (Although it is not significant, 2 extra megapixel is indeed XSi's advantage).
  • Canon EOS superior lenses selection and accesories
  • XSi / 450D accepts SD card, cheaper and used mainly for compact cameras. E-520 uses Compact Flash and xd card. (mainly used by digital SLR cameras).
Olympus E-520 advantage
  • Ability to buy twin kit lens (wide angle 14-42mm and telephoto 40-150mm) in a very attractive price
Tied or undetermined
  • Ergonomic: Both camera are almost in the same size, Olympus E-520 is shorter but wider. Both are build with high quality plastic and have texturized grip.
  • Both cameras have dust management system
  • Both cameras have image stabilization either in body or kit lens.
  • ISO up to 1600
  • Live View Mode (great for macro or still shots)
  • Canon kit lens are slightly sharper, but Olympus kit lens is better in handling Chromatic Abberation (color fringing in high contrast edge).
In conclusion...
Canon XSi wins in many aspects but there are couple reasons why you might end up choosing Olympus E-520:
  • You don't plan to upgrade lenses (the twin kit lenses from Olympus can satisfy you on most of the occasions).
  • You have Olympus SLR or Four Third System lenses
  • You like E-520 body handling, ergonomic dan control better.

Olympus E-3 vs Canon 40D vs Nikon D300

Olympus E-3 is a best Olympus digital SLR camera in 2008. Compared to other semi / professional camera in the market such as Canon 40D and Nikon D300, Olympus E3 has some unique strengths.

Right, from the top: Olympus E-3, Canon 40D and Nikon D300

Unique Features
  • Water Splash Proof - Olympus E3 camera body boasts a water splash free. 40D is not waterproof, D300 has a better water resistant but it is not splash proof either. Like two other cameras, E3 camera is built from magnesium alloy casing.

  • Articulating LCD screens - Olympus has smaller LCD screen (2.5"), but it has an ability to tilt and swivel like super zoom cameras. This unique feature in DSLR lens are helpful for photographers when they need to take pictures in awkward angle or self portrait.

  • Built in stabilization up to 3-4 stops - Like lower end model, E-3 has built-in stabilization in the camera body instead of the lenses. This technology in E-3 has been improved from E-5x0 series and E-4X0 series and can stabilize any four third system lenses up to three to four stops. This is a very useful features and can save users money for a long run. (Because Canon and Nikon charging relatively high price for lens-based stabilized lenses compare to non-stabilized lenses).
Similarity and Differences
E-3 has 11 points AF system, 2 points more than 40D but a lot less than Nikon's customizable 51 Auto Focus points. E-3 boasts the fastest Auto Focus camera but only if you use Olympus 12-60mm SWD lens. ISO up to 3200, and continuous shooting up to 5 fps, slightly slower than 40D (6.5 fps) and Nikon D300 (6 fps and 8 fps with battery grip) but The weight and the dimension are almost the same, as you can see in the picture.

All Olympus digital SLR cameras belong to four third system. It means that the image produces by this camera will come up with 4 : 3 ratio instead of 3 : 2 ratio. 4 : 3 ratio images are more square than the 3 : 2.

Four third system also using smaller sensor than Canon, Nikon, Sony and Pentax DSLR cameras. This smaller sensor creates noisier in high ISO setting. But due to noise reduction technology in high ISO, this weakness can be minimized.

Control and Ergonomic
E-3 has a very good control and ergonomic. It has two thumb dials, many dedicated buttons and four way selection buttons (can't be find on either 40D or D300. E-3 is significantly bigger and tougher than E-510 or E-520. Overall the ergonomic and control are comparable to the top digital slr camera in the market.

Lens Selection
Please check out our article about Four Third System and Olympus lens comparison

Price
Although E-3 has an edge in several areas, it comes with a premium price. It is priced $1450, about $200 cheaper than D300 but $450 more expensive from 40D.

In Conclusion
This camera is top of the line of Olympus system and it is suitable for users who love to travel and wildlife because of the weather resistant features. For first time user, you probably will love the control, swivel lcd and image stabilization that keep your picture blur free due to camera shake.

For users of lower-end Olympus cameras such as E-510 or E-410, this camera will are significantly improved and worthwhile for upgrade especially if you are planning to go to professional route.

Silhouette technique

To create a silhouette effect of a subject is very simple. You just need a right condition.

  • You need a subject which is getting a strong bright back light.
  • Set your exposure compensation up to -2 (depending on the need) and focus on the object.
  • Hit the shutter button.
  • You can further refine the picture in image editing software such as photoshop

Canon XSi / 450D versus Canon XTi / 400D comparison

Canon Rebel XSi or 450D is the best Rebel camera so far boasting 12megapixel resolution, 9 auto focus points, stabilized kit lens, spot metering and many features that we usually find only in high end model such as Canon 40D.

Body and control
At a glance, 450D is very similar to 400D. small and lightweight. (aprox. 500 g). If we look carefully (XSi is on the bottom), XSi is curvier and therefore slightly more ergonomic than 400D. XSi also has rubberized texture in the grip.

From the top, the button and dial placement of the camera is identical. The only difference is XSi has dedicated ISO button right behind the shutter button.

From the back, there are some changes in placement because XSi has a bigger lcd screen 3 inches compared to 2.5 inches (XSi is on the top). But both camera buttons are placed reasonably.

Features
XSi has many areas that are improved from XTi.

Some of them includes:
  • Two extra megapixels
  • Three inches lcd screens compared to 2.5 inches
  • Slightly bigger viewfinder
  • Better ergonomic
  • Live view mode (good for macro or still life)
  • Option to get new stabilized kit lens 18-55mm IS
  • Faster image processing and Auto Focus up to 30% faster on already fast 400D - From DIGIC II to III Processor
  • Spot metering
  • Some other custom functions such as highlight tone priority
Price
XSi and XTi both with the kit lenses are priced around $650 and $750.
That means with $100 extra, you can get all of the improvement above.

In conclusion, Canon Rebel XSi is a very nice upgrade from XTi. If you are looking for your first dslr or looking to upgrade from entry level cameras, XSi is a very good choice.

A little bit about Canon Rebel XS
Canon XS or 1000D is released to replace XTi. It is priced almost the same as XSi but have a few improvement from 400D. The only significant improvement is the mediocre live view mode and image processing speed. So in my opinion, it is not worthy unless the price drop.

Prime lens vs Zoom lens Debunking the Myth

Many beginners in DSLR world may be confused why prime lens are still in the market because prime lens are so inflexible. Prime lens has fixed focal length which means the users can not use the lens for zoom.

Before, prime lens are popular because the sharpness and quality of the image are generally better than zoom lens. But now, zoom lens can match the quality of prime lens if not better.

Today, prime lens still has several advantages:
  • Most of the 'modern' prime lens has aperture or f stop bigger than f/2.8 (for example f/1.4, or f/1.8). This big aperture has two major advantages: 1. Better in low light situation because it can get two or three times more light. 2. Better isolation of subjects by blurring the background/foreground.

  • Prime lenses are also generally shorter and therefore lighter and more portable than zoom lenses. Some manufacturer such as Pentax and Olympus have prime lenses which are so short that people call it pancake lenses. (Check out Pentax System and Olympus System)

How about price? Although some of prime lens such as 50mm f/1.8 is cheaper than zoom lenses, not all prime lenses are cheaper especially longer telephoto zoom. Canon 600mm f4 costs $7600. Better built quality 50mm f/1.4 lens costs $375, more expensive than telephoto zoom 55-250mm IS ($300).

Most great macro lenses are prime lenses, usually has focal length around 50 to 100mm.

Some prime lens are engineered for portrait, they are more contrast and have a smoother blur/bokeh. For example Canon 85mm f/1.8 USM

Portrait Photography Tutorial : Catch light

When you are shooting portrait photos, the most important rule is to keep the eyes on focus. The other important rule is to capture catch light / sparkle in the eyes. Without catch light, your subjects will look less attractive and lifeless.

To get the eye on focus is relatively simple, you can set your camera to "P" mode or other advance shooting mode such as TV, AV or M, and use pop-up flash or external flash.

Fire a test shot. If the flash is overpowering, reduce the flash exposure compensation in the menu (-1 or -2). Make sure that the flash is not overpowering the ambient light.

You can also use bounce card or flash diffusers that reflects some of the light forward such as a bounce card, Lumiquest' Promax, Demb diffuser and so on. Using a diffuser has an advantage than direct flash. You might have a softer shadow and more even light around the frame.

This technique is also called fill flash (usually use for backlit or to reduce shadow in subjects).

Canon 40D versus Nikon D300 comparison

Canon 40D and Nikon D300 is top of the line Digital SLR camera up to date from its respected brand.

Nikon D300 is priced more than $500 than Canon 40D has many advantages compare to 40D

Some of important feature advantages are listed below:
  • D300 has 51 Auto Focus points compare to 40D's 9 points. Even though Nikon has many more AF points, it does not mean that the AF speed is much more superior. 40D AF system work very well in tracking and has almost an equal speed of Nikon. The difference is just 0.01 to 0.05 second.
  • Nikon D300 has ISO up to 6400 compare to Canon 3200. D300 also has better noise handling than Canon. From ISO 1600 and up, D300 is better. Nikon's native ISO starts at 200 which is noisier than 40D's ISO 100.
  • About continuous shots, Nikon D300 max out at 8 fps vs 40D has only 6.5 fps. But the 8 fps of Nikon only achieved when D300's battery grip is attached. The battery grip itself is priced around $225-250. Without the grip, Nikon shoots 6 fps.
  • D300 is a weather proof camera. It is waterproof while 40D is not, although both are metal-magnesium alloy built.
  • D300 has more live view mode that is better than 40D because it allows auto focusing in shooting macro and have tripod live view mode.
Above are the obvious advantages of Nikon D300 over Canon 40D.

When to choose Nikon D300
  • You have many Nikon lenses and accessories in your arsenal and want to use them.
  • Your budget is flexible and you want to have the best small sensor format camera on the market
  • You need the fastest, most sophisticated AF tracking and shooting speed for sports or fast action or performance.
  • You consistently shoot in low light condition and do not allowed to use flash. D300 helps because you can increase the iso sensitivities up to 6400. or 1 stop advantage over 40D.
  • You need a waterproof camera

When to choose Canon 40D
  • You have many Canon EOS lenses and accessories in your trunk.
  • Your budget is flexible but tight

Things to remember:
Camera features would not make you a better photographer but it will make your job a little bit easier. Good lenses and accessories are still a very high determinant that you will get the best shot out of the camera.

If you are in tight budget, I suggest you to invest more on the lenses and accessories such as external lighting (flash, strobes, diffuser etc).

Last thing to consider is body ergonomic and control. Play around with camera body to see which camera fits your hand better.

Sony Cybershot T700 T77 vs Nikon Coolpix S60

Sony and Nikon just announced the new ultra-slim camera packed with consumer friendly features and great design.

Both of Sony camera's the design are very slim, aproximately 0.625 inch thick. Featuring lcd touch screen of 3 and 3.5 inches.

Left: Sony T77 and Right: T700

Sony T700, T77 are designed for consumers in mind.

It have several features for shooting portraits:
  • Face detection
  • Anti-blink (cameras will take two shoots simultaneously in portrait mode and recording only the photo with less squinting or blinking. Warning notice will also given in other shooting modes)
  • Smile shutter mode (Automatically shoot if camera detect object is smiling)
  • With the lcd screens, users can retouch the image directly from the camera
  • Super Steady Shot to combat handshake

Differences of T700 and T77 are:
  • Price: T77 are $100 more expensive than T700
  • Internal Storage: T77 has 4GB internal storage
  • Surprisingly the less expensive T700 has slightly bigger lcd screen (3 vs 3.5 inches)

Nikon Coolpix S60 ($350) is also aiming for portraits shooters.

Some of the features:
  • Face priority AF

Both brand designs come with 5 color options. Sony has green, pink, black, white and dark red, while Nikon has black, white, pink, burgundy and bronze. 10 megapixel resolution, focal length approximately 30-165mm (35mm equiv)

At a glance, Nikon and Sony's camera has been pretty similar in price point or features. The only differences might be the body design and storage.

Nikon S60 has contour on its body for better gripping and ergonomics. In contrast, Sony cameras are flat and very slim. Overall Sony's camera look very stylist and trendy.

For storage, T77 has internal 4GB storage which is very convenient but I don't think it worth $100. Like other Sony digital cameras, T700 and T77 only support Sony memory stick pro duo which are generally more expensive than SD memory card that Nikon use. SD cards are easier to find and used by many kind of cameras.

Nikon Coolpix S60 Camera
From rear it is identical to Sony cybershot but from front and side view,
we can see that Nikon camera is not flat.

In Conclusions
Both T700, T77 and S60 are very good choice for users who value ultimate portability and style design. It is best for people who want to capture some candid or group portraits in casual social events / parties.

Nikon S60 has better ergonomic and produces better image capture (due to high quality EXPEED image processing) especially with flash (due to D-lighting) , but S60 is a little bit thicker (0.9 inch compare to Sony's 0.625 inch). Sony cameras are also likely to win users who value style and trendiness above everything else.

Covering political events

Political events have several characteristics, speeches, posters, many attendes, podium etc.

Depend on who are the speakers, environment, covering political events can be very challenging.

Some composition shots that I recommend to take are
  • Close-up photos of speakers
  • Wide scene photos, speakers with the crowds
  • Hand-shake pictures
  • Speaker with posters, banner for backdrop
Some equipments for the events
  • Camera with long telephoto lens and wide angle lens (two cameras are good). Suggested focal length (35mm equivalent) 24-70mm and 70-200mm
  • External flash with flash modifier / diffuser (for fill light)
Some tips
  • Be ready at all time, practices, know your equipment well
  • Be alert of light change (especially if you are outdoor).
  • Move around, get a better composition
  • Look at other photographer and look at how they do it, you might learn a trick or two.

New: Nikon P6000 vs Canon G9 Bridge camera showdown

Nikon recently announces a new flagship (the best) bridge compact camera up to date. This camera is a solid answer to Canon G9.

Body and Control
Both camera has almost identical shape and size, but there are some differences. From the picture on the right, it is obvious that Canon has a bigger lcd screen, two buttons on the right for auto focusing points selection (This is similar to Canon's DSLR cameras), dedicated ISO adjustment dial on the top of the camera.

Nikon P6000 does not have as many buttons and dials as G9 but it has pop-up flash button, because the flash is hidden inside the body. The placement of the buttons are very good and intuitive.

Although P6000 has a smaller lcd screen and fewer control buttons, P6000's shutter and grip are arguably better because it is bigger, and the grip allows more space for your hand and fingers to handle this camera securely.

There are many similarities between the cameras
  • High-end compact camera with sturdy body construction (metal-magnesium alloy)
  • DLSR Control, aperture, manual and speed priority control
  • Size and weight are almost identical (12 oz, 120 g) and width 4.2 inch
  • Basic accessories available such as wide tele converter and compatible with external flashes.
  • Both lenses has Optical stabilization built in
  • Movie recording capability
  • Identical price of $499
Nikon P6000 advantages
  • High ISO setting (Canon up to 3200, Nikon up to 6400)
  • P6000 has 13.5 megapixel, Canon has 12.5 megapixel
  • P6000 GPS feature ability allows users to upload to Nikon's exclusive mypicturetown website
  • Better grip and bigger shutter button.
  • P6000's pop-up flash might be stronger than Canon
  • Lens' focal length equiv. to 28-105mm is more capable in tight space such as indoor or room
Canon G9 advantages
  • G9 has bigger lcd screen (3 inches vs 2.7 inches).
  • G9 might has a better body control, buttons and dial
  • Lens' focal length equiv. to 35-210mm is more capable in longer zoom length.
Conclusion
Nikon P6000 is front runner right now in bridge camera and bestest Canon in many areas such as higher megapixel, stronger pop-up flash, new GPS allows users to upload and share picture as soon as possible, higher ISO for low light shots, wide focal length might be more useful than tele zoom lens, and better grip and shutter.

However, you might also consider Canon G9 if you have Canon external flash unit such as Speedlite 4xx or 5xx series, demand a longer zoom or if you want a better control and bigger LCD screen.
