New lenses for Pentax and Sony DSLR

by Enche Tjin on May 20, 2009

More exciting news this month, Pentax and Sony announce some new lenses following the announcement of their new cameras: Pentax k-7 and Sony Alpha series cameras (Sony launches Alpha 230, Alpha 330 and Alpha 380).

Pentax announces PENTAX-DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6AL WR and PENTAX-DA 50-200mm F4-5.6ED WR. Quality wise, this lenses are just like other kit lenses, but the built-quality of these lenses are much better because it is water resistant. The development of these lenses are requested several years by Pentax fans because most Pentax cameras are weather/water proof except entry level Pentax k2000/k-m. In the same week, Sony announces some new SAL lenses and one flash

  • The SAL-1855 standard zoom lens will cost about $200.
  • The SAL-55200 telephoto zoom lens will cost about $230.
  • The SAL-50F18 portrait lens will cost about $150.
  • The SAL-30 F/2.8 MACRO SAM
  • The HVL-F20AM flash will cost about $130.

All these lenses are entry-level lenses for budget minded photographer. The interesting thing about these lenses are the built-in motor which ensure silent focusing. We can expect the new kit lens SAL-18-55mm to be better than its predecessor 18-70mm. By introducing these general entry level lenses and series of cameras, Sony is poised to compete with Canon and Nikon in the entry level DSLR camera market.
