After a myriad of rumors, Pentax finally announce the new flagship DSLR camera. What is the similarity and difference between Pentax K-7 with existing Pentax cameras in the market such as k20d, k200d and k2000 (k-m)? Since the launch of Pentax k2000 last year, Pentax is consistent on the idea to create a more compact DSLR, and Pentax K-7 is one of their product.
Packed power (14 megapixels, 5 continuous burst, 720p HD 30fps with external mic, waterproof magnesium alloy body, etc), K-7 surely beats its predecessor (k20d), and arguably slightly better in features than Canon 50D and Nikon D300 in some aspects.
Pentax k-7 features Shake Reduction (SR) to combat hand shake and improved anti-dust mechanism. SR will save money in the long term because lens-based shake reduction is generally more expensive.
Pentax k-7 is the most compact advanced DSLR with SR and the water/weatherproof body. K-7 dimension is 5.7×4.2×2.9in (146×108x74mm). It is slightly smaller than Nikon D90, a mid-range DSLR camera, and significantly smaller and 100-200g lighter than Canon 50D, Nikon D300. Along with the camera, Pentax also announces new Pentax kit lens with WR (Water/Weather Resistant).
While the compact size is popular now, but in history, photographers do not mind to carry heavier cameras such as Nikon D3 or 1d mark 3. It is because bigger camera gives better grip/handling especially when heavy and long lens is mounted.
Who is the camera for?
This camera is great for photographers who like to travel light and occasionally face with harsh environmental condition. It is also great for creative multimedia artists who like to do multimedia presentation involving stills and videos.
In Conclusion
In my opinion, this camera will not lure away professional photographers who already use Canon or Nikon system to Pentax because Pentax lenses and accessories selection is still behind Canon and Nikon for professional use (Check out Canon vs Pentax post). Pentax k-7 is not significantly better than Canon or Nikon advanced DSLR cameras as well. But for amateurs or pro photographers who travels a lot and like to experiment with audio visual, they might want to consider this camera. For landscape or still photographers, Pentax k20D will be sufficient. For sports photographers, D300 and Canon 50D are better choices because of better AF system and faster continuous shooting.

Thanks for this post. I found this particularly helpful as I was comparing the Pentax K-7 to a Canon 40D and am being blown away by the reviews online. I’m really convinced the Pentax is the way to go, as far as bang for my buck with professional quality.
