Canon 60D and Nikon D300s The Great Duel this Fall!

by Enche Tjin on June 18, 2009

Although It is not yet announced, Canon 60D (some people call it 7D) and Nikon D300s already make a huge buzz in the internet.

According to Canon Rumors site, Canon 60D will have everything Canon 50D has to offer plus movie mode, slightly faster continuous shooting (6.3 fps to 7 fps), 13 AF points and possibly a new design. Nikon D300s is also rumored to has everything D300 has to offer plus movie mode with external audio output option, dual memory card slot (SD and CF), and quiet shutter release.

The most significant improvement of Canon 60D is the addition of the movie mode, and the new 13 AF points. Canon AF system is a weak point compare to Nikon 51 AF points with 3D tracking. This improvement will be very welcomed by Canon photographers, especially photojournalists.

Video mode is also a big theme this year. Almost all camera released so far has video mode: Nikon D5000, Canon T1i/500D, and Pentax K7. However, it is unknown if Canon 60D have external audio option like Canon 5D mark II and manual exposure control.

Here is the Canon 60D spec which is talked around the web:

  • 15.1 megapixels
  • ISO 100-25600
  • 7 fps
  • Digic V
  • Movie-mode: 1080p with 30 and 24fps
  • build in GPS for geo-tagging
  • only a SD-card slot (no CF)
  • 148×109×75mm and 738g

Along with 60D, Canon is working on 1D4 which is successor of 1D3, a professional camera designed especially for sports photographers. Not many spec leaked yet, but from discussion through the net, it is possibility that Canon will still use APS-H image sensor which has 1.3x crop factor.

Canon 60D will be a great upgrade from Canon Rebel users and Canon 40D/50D users.

Update: 7/14/2009 : Canon Rumors gets another tips from new source that say 60D will be using 1.3x APS-H sensor which will make it mini 1D mark iii. If that is true, then EF-S lenses user will be disappointed because the camera won’t be compatible with EF-S lenses.

The rumor is echoed by Examiner.

Update: Canon officially launch Canon EOS 7D
