Have you ever wonder why in certain sports events there are so many photographers using the same set of camera and lenses? It is because the company sponsorship. Big DSLR companies like Canon and Nikon usually do that. They lend their hi-end sports cameras and long telephoto lenses for press photographers to use in the event. With this sponsorship, company hopes to lure away sports photographer from their usual gears.

example of the company sponsorship is quoted below

Nikon, Official Partner of the 13th FINA World Championships, will provide equipment including Nikon D3 digital-SLR cameras and NIKKOR lenses such as the AF-S VR Nikkor 300mm f/2.8G IF-ED, to press photographers covering the events
