Nikon Rumours website reports Nikon will announce new Nikon telephoto zoom lens, Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G VR II, aproximatelly in one or two months.

This lens is a highly anticipated lens by Nikon full frame (FX) camera users especially Nikon D3 and Nikon D700 users. This lens will also great for crop sensor camera (DX) cameras.

Nikon has 70-200mm f/2.8 AF-S VR lens, but this 5-6 years old lens is optimized for DX or crop sensor Nikon cameras such as D300 and D90. 5-6 years ago, there is no Nikon digital SLR full frame camera.

Because it is only optimized for crop sensor camera, this lens produces image that has quite amount of vignetting in the corner of the frame. The new lens will likely to make Nikon full frame camera owner happy.

In the last few months, there are rumor that Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 AF-S VR is discontinued in many places. The lens is in constant shortage and now the price is around U$1900. It is quite hard to predict the price of this new lens, but logically it won’t be cheaper than US$1700.

What is new?

  • Nano coating will help to eliminate ghost and flare as a result of strong light entering lens diagonally
  • The new lens is rumored to have Vibration Reduction generation II which boast up to 4 stops image stabilization.
