More Panasonic LX5 / GL1 photos and specs

by Enche Tjin on July 21, 2009

A Japanese blog reports that the next Panasonic micro four thirds camera would be a small one, as small as Olympus E-P1. Looking from computer generated model, LX5 will have slightly bigger size, 12 megapixel, all black metal finish, and two lenses. But like EP-1, LX5 won’t have built-in viewfinder but there will be built-in flash.

One of the lens is 21mm pancake standard lens (equiv to 42mm). The other one is the zoom lens 12-42mm (24-84mm). These lenses are definitely most wanted lenses. The lenses will employ lens-based Panasonic image stabilization / MEGA OIS not the built in body stabilization. But don’t worry, most of the lenses include 21mm will have MEGA OIS.

Because this camera belong to micro four thirds system, it will be compatible with all micro four thirds lenses plus other lenses with special adapter.

Other improvement would be movie recording speed. LX5 / GL1 will have 50fps and 60fps option full HD

Camera body will have several color to choose from, black, maroon and dark blue.

One of LX3 weakness is the appearance of noise in ISO 400 or higher

The rumor include the successors of LX3, which is planned to be introduce in the same time. Panasonic LX4 is rumored to have a slightly bigger sensor. This means that LX4 will have a better image resolution (possibly 12mp) and slightly cleaner noise.

Unfortunately, according to the rumor this GL1 / LX5 and LX4 won’t be in the market until January 2010.

Update: New photos, Panasonic GF1 and lenses

Ok, todays date is 23 July 09. Over the past few days been reading loads of reviews on the LX3. Didn’t read one bad review! Went into a well known UK camera shop to buy one and was told it was discontinued lol. After all that! Been looking at buying one of those since late last year. I’m guessing it would be too early to ask anyone if this new LX5 will be as good or better?

Glenn, I have no idea if it is discontinued but it is definitely hard to find. According to the rumor, LX5 will be micro four third system (interchangeable lens) it will be more expensive and larger in size, but image quality will be better.

However, there is also rumor about LX4 which is successor of LX3, which will be better as well because of the larger sensor. If these rumors are true, these cameras won’t hit the store until early 2010.

Thanks for the info. I can get the LX3 quiet easy, John Lewis, Amazon etc all have in stock. Should I wait for the end of the year or buy a LX3, will I notice so much a difference in the quality of the image. How about the Leica D Lux4, is that worth a try? The Olympus model looks very nice but so is the price .

Leica D Lux4 is basically the same as Panasonic LX3 with increased price tag because it has Leica brand and casing. I don’t recommend it.

We all don’t know how much difference int the quality of the image. Like other electronics such as computer, I think if you need it you should get it because there will be always better products will come and if you don’t make decision, you will wait forever.

Rather waiting forever, I suggest to get one so that you don’t waste time waiting and start making photographs.

The ideal camera is for me Panasonic LC-1 updated at 2009 : interchangeable lenses, micro four thirds, same metal body, same rangefinder design,…
