If you are shooting the entire wedding, it takes about 750 shots. This will cover the preparation, some group portraits, ceremony, the formals and the reception.
Some photographers will do more, some will do less depends on what photography philosophy they embrace. Some photographers shoot wedding like machine gun so they can get every bits of the wedding. This will approximately takes 1000-2500 photos.
The other approach is the careful, thoughtful shooting. Usually, this type of photographers will shot around 500-800 shots a day.
Capacity
Nevertheless, you will need plenty of memory cards especially if you shoot everything in RAW mode. RAW photos takes up 3-4 times more space than JPG, but they stored a lot more of photos information (for example color balance, exposure, etc) so that you can adjust it later for best result.
That being said, you will need approx. 20 GB memory cards if you shoot in all RAW at 12 megapixel image. If you shoot JPG, you might need only around 5-6 GB. However, if you employ machine gun shooting type, you might need around 40 GB or memory cards. WOW!
Brands
Sandisk Extreme cards are extremely popular among pro photographer because it is fast to transfer data from camera and also fast when you download it to your hard drives. The memory cards are a must when you shoot in RAW and continuous burst. The downside of this card is the price. It is 2 to 3 times more expensive than regular one.
Throughout the time, I found Kingston memory card works pretty good too. But avoid the generic or no brand memory cards. They will broke anytime and It happens on once and I throw it right away.
Storage space
Because you will have many memory cards, you might need some bag / case to organize and protect your cards. Make sure that your cards are small enough to carry around with you. You also want to make sure that your card is easily accessible. If you have assorted card such as SD cards and CF cards, I recommend Think Tank Pixel Rocket.
