Canon EOS Rebel XS / 1000d is better from Nikon D60 from many aspects, but now, Nikon comes out with the new D3000 which is potentially replace D60 or D40 in entry level DSLR camera market. Nikon D3000 has three major improvements over Nikon D60: Improved auto focus, larger lcd screen and guide mode. But is D3000 is better than one year old Canon XS?
Let’s check it out:
The new entry level Nikon DSLR camera
Here is Nikon D3000 advantage
- 11 AF points vs 7 AF points
- Larger LCD screen, 3″ vs 2.5″
- Guide Mode and extensive in camera photo retouch
- Better ergonomic
Here is Canon XS advantage
- Ability to connect the camera and shoot from your computer
- Live view mode which allow you to use lcd screen to compose your shot.
- Compatibility of all Canon EOS lenses
One year older XS has some advantages
So, Nikon D3000 for sure has become more user friendly than Canon XS. This might be important if you have limited knowledge of photography. It also has bigger LCD screen so that you can review your pictures better. The D3000 design is also improved from Nikon D60. It feels more solid than Canon XS. Nikon D3000 also has more auto focus points and coverage than Canon XS which only have 7 points. This will help when you compose a picture.
But the Canon still has some important advantages. Nikon D3000 is compatible with most of Nikon lenses. But when you mount some fixed focal lens that does not have AF-S or built in focus motor, you have to manual focus. Nikon D3000 also does not have live view feature. Live view let photographer to compose picture from LCD screen. Even the implementation of this feature is not as good as compact cameras such as slow auto focus. But this feature is very helpful in macro or close-up photography. You can magnify the object in your screen and fine tune manual focus to get the exact focus that you like.
Overall, both cameras is capable to take equally stunning pictures. You should make a decision whether live view and Nikon lens compatibility are important or not. You should also try to get a hold of the camera if you have chance.

Which camera has better picture quality?
hi
thanks for the nice information
Add also that Nikon D3000 on higher ISO has a lot of noise. For Canon 1000D, that I do not know. I am still researching.
Canon 1000d is around half stop better in noise management.
My daughter has the D-3000 and I have the Canon rebel XS. We were shooting images today of the same bluejay. She used the Nikon 50-200 zoom and I the Canon 75-300 zoom. I put many sets of similar images up side by side and when doing detail analysis the D-3000 holds a clear advantage. Her camera captured image details mine missed and there was more punch and accuracy on the D-3000. Also, there was a lot of chromatic (Purple) color bordering on my canon images. The birds feathers hand bands of red color on the canon that were non-existent on the Nikon. I frankly was blown away by the comparison. While not a true apples to apples comparison in my home test the Nikon was the clear winner. I must point out however that when just viewing the images at normal size I could not appreciate these differences easily.
@ eric… thanks for your input…
I am confused about deciding what to buy. Canon 1000D or nikon D3000.
Nikon – ergonomics and make is good
Canon has live view
Canon is cheaper.
and image quality the most important……………. canon or nikon????? found many opposite views in many reviews.
please advice…
Canon 1000D.. final answer!
cannon 1000 D is good.. i loved its lens.. mwah
one of the Canon 1000D advantages:
Compatibility of all Canon EOS lenses?
Nikon D3000 lens compatibility is too broad, even supporting Nikon old lenses from 1979’s so I bet the writer is thinking this is bad idea?
Here’s my addition to Nikon D3000 disadvantages:
-$20 higher price.
-too much white balance override settings (NIkon has 12, Canon only 6)
-light metering too professional, not suitable for beginners (Nikon has 420 pixel 3D Matrix Metering II, derived from D90 or D5000, Canon got the same 35 zone eval which tends to overexposure in many review I see)
-exposure compensation too much (Nikon has +/- 5 EV, Canon has simply only 2)
-packed with AF-S 18-55mm VR which is ultrasonic and considered best in class lens (too sharp and lightweight) which makes photographing with Nikon D3000 seems too professional and beginners won’t like it. Canon 1000D’s kit lens has hi-tech motor noise during autofocus, and the images are in good balance, sharp enough but not too sharp).
-in many store around my location in Indonesia, Canon 1000D usually comes with free plastic tripod, memory card, beginner’s travelbag, or even picnic mat. Nikons mostly only provided with free memory card by the store.
hope that helps you decide!
Even you can mount old Nikon AF lenses, there is no way to auto focus it. To make matter worse, no live view to check the focus.
and if you don’t want manual focus, simply don’t use old AF lenses (even AI); as simple as that.
In my humble opinion, having the ability to mount more lens types eventhough they won’t work in convenience (no AF, no meter), is still a plus point rather than never be able to mount more lens at all; creative people might go into experiment with those additional lens support. OR may be its a negative point? because they would find they can mount more lenses but they find those lenses as “disappointing” ?
Choose Canon for simplicity.
go for sony a230
Nikon D3000 is the best for it’s image quality.
hi i just purchased the rebel canon xs but i actually was going to buy the nikon d3000
was that a bad choice? should i go exchange it?
Janice, I don’t think choosing either camera will be a bad choice, because they have their own strength and weaknesses.
hi, im buying my first slr camera. I went to best buy and asked about the nikon d3000 or the canon xs, the lady at best buy said to go with the canon. i didn’t trust them because not all of them are camera experts. i really need an answer to my question, because im going on a trip and i need a new camera fast.
Hi Mike, both cameras are great for beginner. However, if I have to pick, I will pick Canon XS over D3000 because it has live view and compatible with all Canon EOS lenses. Other people may prefer Nikon D3000 because of the ergonomic, AF and larger screen.
Have you tried both cameras on your hand? which one is more comfortable?
Hi All,
I am using SLR(Nikon F series, VIvitar, Pentax etc) for last 10 years and now planning to buy my first DSLR. I have two options – Nikon D3000 and Canon 1000D.
People has different views while choosing a camera considering all the aspects.
But, If and only If the clarity, color saturation and Image quality is concerned. Which is the better one?
According to DXomark, they are almost similar. Check out their website and compare the two cameras side by side.
Hello i have jus bought the nikon d 3000 and i havent explored much of it .. cuz its jus few hours and m searching for useful comments … and was jus wondering what lens shoud i go for cuz i have 18-55mm lens how abt 200mm signma lens ???
Do you mean Sigma 18-200mm ? I don’t recommend it. Instead, look for Sigma 18-250mm OS HSM. or Canon 18-200mm IS.
why did you choose canon xs over d3000 because of compatibility with all canon eOS lenses” ? i think d3000 is also compatible with all its af-s and af-i lenses.. or you want to say that compatibility with eos lenses is an advantage, so since nikons won’t mount eos lenses, you’d pick canon? too bad d3000 doesn’t support eos lenses.
That is true you can mount older Nikon lens into D3000, however, it is not fully compatible, for example, auto focus will not work at all. But, in Canon, you can enjoy full compatibility.
yeah so, in my opinion, full compatibility with full range of EOS lenses is indeed an advantage, especially if you want to get more lenses some point in the future.
People IMO Both cameras are great Both have their advantages and disadvantages that is why some people who are familiar with these cameras are saying they are similar. do not compare each camera per subject or picture because most or some of you don’t know that what your doing is a disadvantage to that particular camera an example is do you know that red color is the weakness of canon and blue for nikon. that is if you look closely. So you might say nikon was better quality when i took a picture of that red thing or vise versa with the blue thing. People who are buying new cameras I think all the advisers in these board have said enough specs, advatages and disadvantages its your call now. what are your Priorities? I mean where are you going to use it? maybe that this will help you decide. Feel the camera try it out which camera gives you a piece of mind.
@Enche
but Canon EOS won’t support any Canon FD Mount lenses, and about Canon supporting all its EOS lenses with autofocus working, seems like the same thing applies to all Nikon AF-S, and AF-D, both G and D lenses.
I believe even if Canon support its older non-autofocus lenses, they won’t autofocus, indeed.
It’s obvious that supporting older non-autofocus lenses wont make them autofocus
Here’s how to compare, in my opinion:
- Mount non-autofocus lenses? Nikon: YES – Canon: NO
- Mount old autofocus lenses? Nikon: AF/AF-D series YES – Canon FD AF lenses NO
- Mount new autofocus lenses? Nikon AF-S series YES – Canon EOS (film and digital) YES
btw I’ll be stupid to say that Canon has a disadvantage: it won’t mount Nikkor AF-S lenses, right? so yeah obviously Canon EOS cameras will mount Canon EOS lenses
Nikon D3000 won’t able to auto focus when you mount Nikon AF-D lenses. It will AF for AF-S lenses. However, if you mount AF-D lens to Nikon D90 or more advanced Nikon SLR, you will able to auto focus.
Different from Canon legacy lenses before EOS system, There are still many AF-D lenses in production and in market. Most don’t have it’s AF-S version for example: 50mm f/1.8, 85mm f/1.8 and f/1.4 and many other. Therefore, it is a disadvantage.
Ok, yesterday I got to use my uncle’s Canon XS nearly the whole day at my family reunion.
I’ve been looking at both of these cameras and I thought that I wanted the Nikon D3000.
Now I have no clue, because later that day my aunt came with her Nikon D3000 and I got to use it.
For some reason the Canon was easier for ME to use, and when I looked at the pictures the Canon seemed to have less noise. I may have liked it more because of the shape it was in (barely used, while the Nikon was… well used).
Now I’m having trouble knowing which one to get. The Canon is cheaper.. so thats kinda pulling me toward it. But everyone keeps saying that Nikon is so much better.. why is that? I’m pretty loyal already to Nikon. Are those 11 point AF thingies THAT important? Or is it more important that I’m able to use any Canon lenses w/ my camera?
I wish there were some camera expert to tell me which camera would work best for me. Its so hard to decide!
Hey Frendz,
I am also going to buy my first DSLR. Its been long time I have been researching on the specs and functions of NIKON D3000 and Canon 1000D. While searching I have found a website comparing SONY a230, Nikon D3000 and Canon 1000D in detail and with pictures taken in same situation. It has compared all 3 brands very nicely. I thought I should share it with u guys to help make decision.

Although Canon has got higher ratings, but still my mind is with Nikon.
Take Care.
I take good photos, but I didn’t have any of these. So I wanna ask you which one is better, canon 1000d or nikon d3000? Please give me a short answer and please answer me as fast as you can.
Canon 1000D
Hi
I need to buy my first DSLR and again the dilemma…nikon D3000 or Canon 1000D???
I am an amateur as of now and I aim to be fashion photographer, and I learnt that majority fashion photographers use Canon DSLRs..however my friend has been using D3000 and it is a great camera and simple to use.. what would u suggest I should do?
please help…
Hi anx, please check my previous comment.
hi…
i am planning to buy a camera for wildlife photography, and i’m still a beginner and i am not able to choose between nikon d3000 and canon 1000d. do you think these cameras will be good or which other camera would you suggest me in the same price range.
does EOS 1000D better than nikon D3000?
and the reasons please…
Yes, in some ways. Check out the post to see the advantages.
Hi I am ready to upgrade from my cannon powershot SD1000 and I am considering either EOS 1000D or NIkonD3000. It’ll be my first dSLR!! Which ever I choose I think i will learn a lot. I’ve been doing a lot of research and the only major difference i found was the image sensor type. Nikon D3000 uses CCD while EOS 1000D uses CMOS. and I noticed that the higher end Nikon uses CMOS sensor. How much effect does image sensor have on picture quality?
and also i noticed all p&s cameras have CCD
There are a lot of debates which kind of sensor is the best, both has their pluses and minuses. In practice, I don’t find any significant differences between camera with CCD sensor and CMOS sensor.
Hello! I too am debating between the Canon 1000d and the Nikon d3000. I have a Canon sd 750 point and shoot, and though I know dslrs and point and shoots have LOADS of differences I can’t be sure that the canon 1000d’s pictures will come out clear because my canon point and shoot was VERY blurry and that makes me worry about Canon’s performance overall.
I haven’t been able to get my hands on a Canon dslr so I was wondering if movement is easy to capture on the Canon 1000d, and as fast as a nikon [d3000].
HI, im using canon 1000D from since 1 year. and i found this is best for amateur photographers. but only disadvantage with comparison to Nikon D3000 is 11 point AF !!
any canon wins over nikon D3000,as compared on its
*price
*Live view system
*compatability to lenses
*fast power on speed
*shutter speed cycle durability
*noise reduction
I find it interesting that the general consensus is that the D3000 is ergonomically superior. One of the deciding factors for me (in purchasing the XS) was its hold and comfort. The Nikon’s 3″ screen hogs the body. Your thumb rests over the selection buttons. DSLRs are difficult for my big-ass hands to operate because of their numerous buttons crowding the hold. The swooped thumb positioning on the XS is choice. I do not feel in danger of dropping it or accidentally depressing buttons.
The Nikon does have a smoother, steadier lens but does not offer the focus “lip” which I also can appreciate on the XS. Both menus are laid out really nicely, but the Canon horizontal view is just so legible, to the point, and accessible.
Also, since I primarily shoot in manual I found that the index wheel as opposed to the thumb wheel (D3000) is way more intuitive. Having the shutter/aperture toggle button right next to the shutter button (D3000) is confusing for me. Am I changing exposure, am I focusing, am I shooting?
But I’m just a big-handed half brain.
It was suuuuch a hard choice that in the end I just had to laugh and choose the one that felt like home. Most definitely the XS/1000D.
That said, the D3000 kicks ass and has amazing picture quality. And now cheaper!
I just purchased the Canon EOS Rebel XS online for a photography class. Did I make the right choice? I have 24 hours after I recieve it to return it….
it is good enough for basic photography class
I recently purchased a Nikon D3000 and I could not ask for more.Well in my opinion, who needs the Live View Function?Sure it lets you take shots in a tight situation but it also makes the camera look a bit unprofessional because as we all know, Live View can be found on almost any point and shoot cameras. I’m new to photography so lens will not be an issue for now, I’m satisfied with my 18-55mm AF VR Lens and consider getting a 200mm. My sister owns a Canon Rebel XS and upon comparing images taken from each camera…there is not much of a difference when it comes to quality. It doesn’t matter whether you grab an XS or a D3000 because these two are competing tightly that you won’t be able to tell the difference..surely there are features found on one camera and not found on the other but we must remember that getting good results depends on the one behind the camera and not the camera itself. Go grab what you feel is best for you..
word of warning.DONT touch the canon 1000d…
image quality is so bad that my 3mp compact does a better job.i took it back to the place of purchase and they gave my another.bother were exactly the same.soft out of focus images.any one here with one try this.,,go outside in good light, focus on 100% grass, take a shot and load on your pc. i bet nothing will be focused as i found.i used the 18-55 and 75-300mm lens approx 30 feet from the subject.try take a pick of a tree say 100 feet away with at least 1000 speed and i bet no leaves will be focused.take a shot of a wall with say a leaf stuck to it and i bet its not focused and it should be cause it on a flat wall.
DONT BUY…
Bert M..
Heii!
I was using bo*th cameras last *eek and I will defen**tly buy Canon EOS 1000d bea*use it’s soo m*ch be*her!!!!! I used “live wive” alot be*cuse of some extreme condi**ns and it’s soo *sier to take bether picture in mu*ment!!! I recomend*t it!!!
Nikon D300: For Beginners, Stop the arguing, if you’re a beginner, take the D3000. THESE 2 CAMERAS SHOULD’NT EVEN BE COMPARED, THEY ARE BOTH FOR BEGINNERS AND 1 HELPS BETTER THAN THE OTHER. D3000!!!!!!!!!!!!
what does the 1000 and 3000 before the D mean?
It just a name. I think it stands for Digital.
