Panasonic G1 vs Olympus PEN E-P1

panasonic-g1-vs-olympus-e-p1-penSo after a while, you decided to try micro four third system, but confused on what camera to use. The recent Olympus PEN E-P1 creates a lot of buzz because its ultra-small form factor and its link to old Olympus PEN design.

But there are some problems I find with the new PEN. It does not have viewfinder and built-in flash and it is relatively expensive at $800. The new PEN older cousin, Panasonic G1 could actually give more value for your money.

Here are the advantages of Panasonic G1

  • Built-in Flash
  • Built in EVF Viewfinder
  • Swivel LCD Screen
  • Faster Auto Focus
  • Lens based Image Stabilization

and here are the advantages of Panasonic Olympus E-P1

  • Better camera body (metal)
  • Smaller form factor
  • Movie Mode
  • About 1 stop better in noise control in high ISO
  • Built-in body image stabilization

In practice, the main difference between the two might be the movie mode. So if  you don’t really need the movie mode, Panasonic G1 give you better bang for the buck. Ironically, The red version of G1 is just $619 while Olympus E-P1 is $800. It is almost $200 cheaper.
