Sigma, like Tamron, is very active in making lenses for digital SLR cameras. Sigma is famous for bringing quality lens (built and image quality) at a lower price compared to DSLR camera manufacturers. Here are some Sigma’s best seller lenses and the reason why they are so succesful.
Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM Price $480
This is Sigma ultra wide angle lens. It is very very popular among landscape photographer. The built quality is great and auto focus is smooth due to HSM (Hypersonic motor). The price is excellent for the lens. Competitors like Canon EF-S 10-22mm and Nikon 14-24mm costs a lot more than this lens. However, Sigma faces tough competition with Tokina, another third party lens maker that has several ultra wide angle lenses in their product line.
Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG APO Telephoto Price: $200
It is affordable telephoto zoom lens that popular among casual wildlife and sport shooters. It compromises image quality and does not have HSM, so the auto focus is a bit jerky sometimes. You get what you paid for.
Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS Price: $385
This is all you can do lens. It has 10 X zoom length in a compact design (100mm / 610 g) with OS (Optical stabilization) in an cheap price. But the image quality is inconsistent and sometimes the auto focus is slow.
Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.4 DC OS Price: $485
This lens is significant better than the 18-200mm. The image quality is more consistent and you get 50 mm extra zoom length. But it comes with a higher price tag. It is about the same size and weight (101mm / 630g). I think this is a better deal.
Sigma 150-500mm f/5.6-6.4 OS HSM APO DG APO Price: $999
This is the great birds, wildlife photography or field sports lens. Sigma is famous for long telephoto zoom and this is one of the most popular one. It has modern feature such as HSM (for smooth and silent focusing) and OS (Optical stabilization) which is much needed for a long lens like this. Although it is big and heavy (252mm / 1.9 kg) but it is still hand holdable for a short period of time.
Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG HSM II Macro Price: 780
This is very good alternative telephoto zoom especially for Nikon cameras, especially Nikon full frame DSLR such as Nikon D700, D3 and D3X. It is a lot cheaper than Nikon 70-200mm VR (which is sold at around $1800), and cheaper than Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 (around $1000). [Read: Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 review)
