Canon 1d mark IV vs Canon 7D

by Enche Tjin on October 23, 2009

Sport photographers, photo enthusiasts and Canon 40D/50D might now wonder which path to upgrade, either getting Canon 1d mark IV or Canon 7D. Both are new DSLR cameras released this year.

There are obvious differences between the two. 1d mark IV is selling at $4999, while Canon 7D only selling at $1699. So, what is the difference?

Canon EOS 7D advantage:

  • 1.6 x crop factor
  • Compact size
  • Low price
  • Bigger resolution by 2 mp
  • Wireless flash commander

Canon 1d mark IV advantage:

  • Bigger sensor 1.3x crop, higher image quality
  • Usable ISO up to ISO 6400 (about 2 stops advantage)
  • 10 fps vs 8 fps continuous shooting
  • Stronger weather/waterproof camera body.
  • Integrated battery grip
  • Dual memory cards slot

Both are very capable cameras. Canon 1d mark IV is ahead in low light shooting capability, while Canon 7D has fairly compact size with relatively attractive price.

My recommendation is if you don’t really shoot in extreme lighting or weather condition, Canon 7D will satisfy your need.

Recently shot a wedding on a Canon 5D Mk II, predominantly at ISO 1600 & ISO 3200. Low Signal to Noise ratio was absolutely superb.

We wanted another camera. Went for 7D over 1D mark III. -Unfortunately the signal to noise ratio on the Canon 7D appears only marginally better if any than that of the Canon 30D & 40D, which we still utilize. The larger sensor size of the Canon 1D mark III seems to make all the difference.

Personal opinion: Canon 1D mark III = bulkier & more expensive, but better in the rain, and Far better image quality above ISO 400.
