Since Leica M9, a full frame digital rangefinder announced on 09.09.09, Jeff Ascough, former Leica rangefinder camera users were flooded by many questions from photographers about whether he will get M9 and go back to use his Leica system (Jeff still has many Leica lenses and a few cameras).
Jeff Ascough finally wrote a post on his blog especially to explain about why he has moved on to Canon DSLR system. In this very interesting post, Jeff explains about the plus and minuses between Leica and DSLR camera system.
Pro about Leica rangefinder :
- Small form factor
- Quiet shutter sound
- Easy to handhold up to 1/8 second
Pro about DSLR system (He uses Canon 5D mark II at the moment)
- See through the lens viewfinder provide more accurate composition
- Live view mode
- Low noise in very high ISO.
Check out Jeff’s blog to see the complete discussion.
After reading this post, and Chris Weeks (freelance photographer that also use Leica M9 and Canon 5D mark II), I came to conclusion that Leica might be best for hobby, for street photography and traveling. But Canon DSLR opens a whole new possibility such as movie recording and a lot of other features that might be more reliable for profesional use.

Forget about handling and differences between rangefinder and DSLR, the Leica film camera, M System in particular, give a totally different image characters. Grains derived from film Leica pictures especially that of monochromes are more artistic and incredibly give the atmosphere of the pictures more ‘dreamy’ and ‘romantic’. This might be because of the fact that Leica lenses deliver a splendid transition of tonal gradation that make the pictures more ‘dreamy’ and painting-like photos…..Terachai Thongvanit, THAILAND
