Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II Price: $2399

I recently stumbled upon a wedding photographer who is reviewing Nikon D3 vs D3s, 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II vs the original VR I. It is not a lab test, but Louis Pang did provide us with many photos including the 100% crop photo.

From there, we find out that 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II has many advantages over the original one, especially mounted in full frame camera.

Some of them are:

  • 1/3 to 1/2 stop brighter when you shoot in the same setting
  • Better control of ghost purple fringing
  • Better control of vignetting
  • Excellent resultĀ  at 200mm f/2.8

and the cons:

  • Bigger, fatter (due to the diameter) and heavier
  • Expensive (Price: around $2400 vs $2000)

Nikon 70-200mmVR II is at its best when mounted on Nikon D3s. TheĀ  image are solid up to ISO 12800, which is comparable to ISO 3200 in Nikon D3/D700.
