Olympus E-P2 vs Olympus E-P1

by Enche Tjin on November 6, 2009

At last, Olympus E-P2 is officially announced, and today, I read that Olympus E-P1 with zoom kit lens is offered by Buy.com at $675 through Amazon. This is quite shocking, but I think it probably won’t last for a long time.

After I read about new E-P2 I found very few differences between the two. Here is the table highlighting the key differences:

Key features Olympus E-P1 Olympus E-P2
Body Silver Black
Accessories external viewfinder for 17mm f/2.8 lens external live view viewfinder, 1.44m dots, 100% coverageexternal microphones
Art filters 6 filters 6 + Diorama and Cross processing
LCD 230k 230k

As you can see, there is nothing major differences we can find in the spec here. If you don’t plan to get external viewfinders or microphone, the only advantage in practical view point is higher resolution LCD screen.

The additional art filter adds only a bit value because E-P2 will likely to cater to enthusiasts who prefers to edit their photos in their computer.

The only thing that we don’t know is there any improvement in Auto Focus speed which is the main weakness of E-P1? If there is no improvement than it won’t change the game for Olympus. In the other words, E-P1 will be more appealing because of the price differences.

You mixed up the art filter selection for both cameras and mistakenly claimed the E-P2 has a higher resolution in your chart.

You don’t mention the hi-res, articulated EVF packed in with the E-P2 either.
