by Enche Tjin on December 10, 2009

Firmware is a small program that enable basic digital camera operation and complex functions. Manufacturers usually upgrade firmwares regularly to enhance the camera operation or to fix bugs (software errors).

While some firmwares won’t affect the operation signifcantly, but some does. So it is crucial to keep on track on your camera firmwares. For example, Canon 5D mark II new firmware allows you to control exposure manually when you record video. Panasonic LX3 latest firmware (2.0) boosts up auto focus speed by 20% and improve auto white balance.

The nice thing about firmware is it is free and available in manufacturers website. Installing firmware is simple and easy. Usually you only need to download and transfer the file to camera.
