Nikon D700s, D700x or D800 ???

Nikon D700

Nikon D700

Via Nikon rumors, we know that Nikon D700 is being phased out in some areas. Is that mean successor is on the way? Based on the history, Nikon D700 is announced around 10 months after Nikon D3. This means D700 successor will be likely to be announced around summer 2010.

But what will be the name and spec?

The most probable is Nikon D700s because Nikon updates its D3 as D3s and D300 as D300s. The ’s’ means it is a small update and focus in speed instead of resolution. So the update will be likely to be similar as Nikon D3s and D300s.

1. Better control of noise in high ISO setting
2. Same 12 megapixel resolution
3. Dual card slots
4. Slightly faster continuous shooting speed (6 to 7 fps) and 8 fps with grip.
5. Quiet release mode
6. HD video recording 720p / 24fps

But, Nikon could also introduce Nikon D700x instead, which could have  higher resolution like Nikon D3x or 24 mp. This might be a dream of budget / amateur studio photographers. But the price might be alot higher than the current Nikon D700, and potentially cannibalize the sale of D3x. So I think it will be unlikely that Nikon will choose this path.

The other probability is Nikon could come out with Nikon D800, a brand new camera with different feature set, it could be a mix between D700x and D700s, which has higher image resolution (14 -18 megapixel), moderate shooting speed 5 fps, and HD video recording mode.

I just want a D700s 12mp that can shoot 12,800 like the D3s for the price of a D700…

Ditto Rodney – High ISO is more important to me than megapixels. I hope for a D700s with the same improvements to ISO that happened in D3s over D3…

I need a balanced camera, and 12MP is so restricting. Our P&S is 14MP. I vote for the last paragraph, Full Frame, 16-18mp, moderate speed, HD video.

I’ll by a 700s of whatever 800x/y/z when it will have:
- All the nice features of the 700 PLUS:
- Same high ISO quality as D3s
- Real HD video (i.e. 1080, not limited in time of sequences)
- Slightly higher resolution, but not necessarily 24 Mpix. 15 to 18 may be good enough, as long as noise gets even better than 700 and frame rate of at least 7 fps. This is kind of a struggle against the basic laws of physics, and I could remain satisfied with the current resolution of 12 Mpix, but I doubt Nikon would release a brand new body with the same resolution. Laws of physics get definitely a lower priority than the laws of marketing.
- Same price as actual 700, a few months after introduction.

I’m waiting for the next camera after the D700.
If Nikon did not improve much the video capability, I pass canon 5D

For 5 years, I’m waiting for a 24mp D700x as a landscape photographer. Still using a D300…
