Hummingbird photography website just reviewed Sony 28-75mm f/2.8. This lens is designed for full frame Sony cameras such as A850 and A900 but it is compatible other Sony Alpha cameras as well. However, the working focal length will be 42-112.5mm. At below $799, this lens is great value for the price compared to Sony Zeiss 24-70mm f/2.8. Don’t forget you will get benefit of image stabilization too, about 1.5 to 2.5 stops.

Sony 28-75mm f/2.8 findings:

  • Construction is good
  • Zoom barrel is heavy but smooth (to fight zoom creep)
  • Zoom creep lock is available
  • Good color contrast
  • Maximum sharpness at f/8
  • Reliable focus performance
  • Good value for money
  • Better sharpness at 28mm than 75mm

Alternative lens will be Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 The Tamron is about $200 cheaper and produces very good image quality but auto focus, quality control and construction quality might not as good as Sony 28-75mm f/2.8.
