Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8  is the best low light zoom lens for Nikon at the moment. It has constant bright (f/2.8) aperture and VC (Vibration Compensation) that is equally good if not better than Nikon VR (Vibration Reduction).

Nikon’s brightest zoom lens is Nikon AF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 which built like tank with speedy auto focus but it lacks image stabilization and very expensive (2X  Tamron price).

Tamron 17-50mm will be a good alternative for Canon DSLR too. Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM is an excellent lens, but the low price and small form factor might lure some Canon shooters to Tamron VC.

DCwatch provides Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 VC field review and sample images.
