Do you want to buy a compact camera but confused which one to choose? You are not alone because there are so many people that confused to get their compact cameras. There are so many models each model has slightly different features. In this guide, I like to share with you which features are important and which are not so important but many people regard it as important.
1. Lens: Like in digital SLR camera, lens is very important to determine quality of the image. I personally love wide angle lens, equivalent to 24mm because it is great to use for landscape, architecture, and indoor photography. Lens that has image stabilization (IS) is also helpful especially in low light condition.
With 28mm wide angle lens, I can frame tall building easily.
2. Camera interface: What I mean about camera interface is the layout of the buttons, dials, switches in the camera. Are them easy to access and make it easy for you to change setting and take a picture? And does the menu organization logically arrange so that it is intuitive and informative? These are important because it will affect how fast and enjoyment you will experience when taking a picture.
3. Camera body: Many cheaper camera thas a very poor and thin plastic casing. I suggest you to avoid these camera because it is easy to fall apart.
4. Manual exposure control: This feature is important if you want to learn basic photography principle and want to make creative photos.
5. LCD screen quality: It is important because you will use the screen to compose picture, and also to check if the photos you’ve taken.
Which features are not so important but many regards it as important?
1. Image resolution or megapixel (MP): Six megapixel is what you need to print up to poster size, and most cameras in the market today has more than 8 megapixel. You don’t have to focus your priority on the biggest megapixel.
2. Zoom length: There are some cameras that able to zoom up to 30x, but according to me, 5 to 10x zoom length are good enough. I personally like non-zoom/prime lens because I am forced to move and find the perfect perspective.
3. In camera retouch: Such as picture cropping, special effects, etc are not important because it drains your battery very fast and also it is better to do it in the computer screen because it is clearer and more flexible.
4. Additional Features such as face detection, anti blink, smile detection, gps, movie mode, etc are also not important, but many of those features are already bundled with cameras in the market.
I hope this guide can be helpful for you who try to find camera for the first time.
