Olympus E-PL1 new m43 camera for photo enthusiasts

by Enche Tjin on February 1, 2010

olympus-e-pl143 rumors website posts some sample pictures taken by Olympus E-PL1, the third Olympus micro four third system camera. E-PL1 (L = Light weight) is designed to be even more smaller and lighter than already small Olympus E-P1E-P2 and Panasonic GF1. It will be more compact, lightweight and fit it with your jacket pocket (only if you mount it with pancake lens). The key is in the material, instead of metal casing, now it has plastic casing. It also has built-in flash which E-P1/E-P2 lack.

It is a good move from Olympus to address problems associated with micro four thirds camera: not small and light enough to carry around, and relatively expensive compare to regular digital SLR camera.

So should you wait to get E-PL1 instead of E-P1/2? It depends on your budget and whether you appreciate the portability in expense of build quality and control.

Olympus E-PL1 price is $599 with 14-42mm zuiko lens.

Fortunately, E-PL1 will also has build-in body stabilization, so any lens you mount on it will have this benefit, including when you shoot video.

Here is Olympus E-PL1 specifications:

  • olympus-e-pl1-back12 MP image resolution
  • HD 720p Video recording
  • Built-in image stabilization
  • 2.7″ 230k LCD screen
  • Live Guide – for various photographic effects
  • Intelligent auto, 19 scenes mode
  • in camera panorama stitch
  • and finally… a pop up flash

Olympus will also release two new lenses, the multi purpose 14-150mm and 9-18mm. For more about Olympus plan on lenses, check out Olympu m43 lens roadmap.

I wonder if it supports the electric viewfinder. If it does, its very good.

On the other hand, if you pay for EV separately, it comes very close to EP-2. And in that case I’ll go with Pen.

I don’t think it supports EV. In business sense if it has one, it will sink the E-P2 which is a lot more expensive ($1099)
