Pentax 645D a step beyond DSLR camera

by Enche Tjin on March 22, 2010

After years of development, HOYA corp (Pentax parent company) released Pentax 645D, and it will be available only for Japan for the time being. Pentax 645D is a portable medium format camera, which has a significant larger image sensor size compared to full frame and crop frame camera in the market. Therefore, it has higher image quality.

Pentax 645D is an unique and brilliant strategy from HOYA because in this class, Pentax has really no real competitor. 645D’s price is around US$9500 – $10,000 far lower than closest competitor, Leica S2, which has price tag of $22,000.

Pentax 645D has features and user interface that resembles Pentax DSLR cameras. Therefore, Pentax users and DSLR users will feel at home. Other digital medium format camera like Hasselblad has very different concept on handling and interface.

This camera has a lot of potential especially in photo enthusiasts who has appetite for better image quality, or a professional that want to have portable and easy to use digital medium format camera. Unfortunately, Pentax 645D is only available in Japan at the moment and only has single lens, which is 55mm f/2.8 ($1,100) at its arsenal. However, if you have Pentax medium format lenses from the past, you will able to use your lenses on 645D.

Great for: landscape photography, wedding especially for portrait, fashion, commercial.
Not very useful for: Photojournalism (sports, reportage, performance), street photography.
