Recommended lens for Panasonic GF1

by Enche Tjin on April 30, 2010

Panasonic GF1 has been a while in the market now, and it is one of the most successful micro four third system camera. In USA, it comes with two bundle. One with 14-45mm or 20mm f/1.7 lenses.

panasonic-20mmI’ve tried 20mm f/1.7 (Price $385) , and it is a terrific lens, small, fast and sharp. It is equivalent to 40mm, which is also called standard lens because it shares similar human eyes point of view. It is very good for street photography, low light photography and portrait. I think any m43 shooters should get one.

After playing for a while, you might find limitation on the lens and might want to get more lenses for various purpose.

Here are some lenses that you might want to consider:

panasonic-45-200mmPanasonic 45-200mm OIS F4-5.6 Price: $299

Usually, telephoto zoom lens is long and heavy, but this lens is very compact. It only weight 380g and 3.9 inches (9.9 cm), which is great for soccer moms or dads. This telephoto zoom lens is  designed for capturing subject from far away, such as birds or sport. It is quite good for portrait and landscape too. Overall, it is a nice complement to your 14-45mm kit lens in a budget price.

panasonic-14-140mmPanasonic 14-140mm F/4-5.8 OIS Vario HD Price: $799

The only Panasonic lens that allows fast and accurate continuous auto focus to operate smoothly and silently during still or movie recording. It 10X zoom lens is great for many circumstances: from street to architecture, portrait to landscape. If you need to have one lens, this might be it.

panasonic-7-14mmPanasonic 7-14mm F/4 Price: $1000

If you love landscape and architecture, ultra wide angle is a great next lens. Focal length equivalent to 14-28mm in full frame sensor is quite rare, I think only Nikon has it at the moment. However the lens is not very versatile, but it is lightweight and has high quality optics that you can count on.

Panasonic-Leica-45mm-macroPanasonic Leica 45mm f/2.8 Macro Price: $869

Leica has been known as quality  lens maker for almost a century. This lens is made by collaboration between traditional (great optics) + modern (great electronic). The only one and must get for macro / close up photographers and could be also use for portraits.

Coming soon in 2010

Panasonic 14mm f/2.8

Traditional photographers will love this lens. Equivalent to 28mm, this focal length is very popular for street photography. The good news is this lens will be as small as Panasonic 20mm f/1.7.

Panasonic 8mm f/3.5 fisheye

Great for fun and artistic photography.

Overall, there are many quality lenses Panasonic offers, and some more to come. It quite surprising for me because this system is just about a year old. Great Job!  That’s all folks.

You can get your lenses from Amazon, they have a very competitive price and great service. I hope this can help you and have fun making pictures with the lenses!
