Got a question recently from reader about G2 vs GF1. Fortunately, I’ve reviewed two of this cameras recently, so I have a pretty good idea about how they differs.
Panasonic G2 is the newer than GF1, it has touch screen technology and improved image quality in high ISO above 1600.
Panasonic is optimized for portability, so it is very compact. It is bigger than bulkier than regular compact camera, but it is still significantly more compact than the smallest DSLR in the market.
Panasonic G2 advantages
- Touchscreen LCD (for auto focus or change setting)
- Slightly better image quality in low light situation
- Protruding pistol grip
- Swivel LCD screen
- Built-in Electronic viewfinder
- More dedicated buttons and switches
Panasonic GF1 advantages
- Smaller and lighter
As you can see, G2 out compete GF1 in feature set. However, Panasonic GF1 is much more compact and light (check out the pictures) especially with 20mm f/1.7. If you plan to travel a lot and want the lightest camera possible, then GF1 is the obvious choice. However, if you are serious in photography and plan to carry many lenses and accessories every time you go for a photo shoot/hunting, then Panasonic G2 will be a better choice.
