Today, Canon announces Canon 60D. Although most of the specs already discussed in the last few months [Canon 60D/2000D rumor], I am a bit surprised about Canon decision.
Canon X0D line (10D to 50D) has been known to be an advanced camera dedicated for sport and photojournalism. Canon 60D is not align to this concept. Instead, 60D took a step back and become a mid-range camera. Therefore, you can expect the camera to do well in most cases, but not as good as the other top of the line/dedicated advanced cameras.
I think Canon develops 60D by keeping highly successful Nikon D90 in mind. Nikon D90 is not as fast and as tough as Canon 50D, however, D90 can record movie, smaller in size and very good in low light condition. Therefore, Canon 60D will likely to compete with successor of Nikon D90 (D95 or D7000).

Canon 60D vs Canon 50D
60D’s main advantages:
- 18 MP sensor (similar to high end Canon 7D)
- Swivel LCD, 3:2 ratio with over 1 million resolution
- 63 metering system (more accurate)
- Smaller and 70g lighter.
- Full HD recording with manual exposure control
- External jack for external microphone
- Use cheaper SD card instead of CF card
- Custom Auto ISO limiter
50D’s main advantages:
- Faster continuous burst (6.3 vs 5.7 fps)
- Bigger buffer size allowing 90 JPG picture per burst vs 56 per burst
- Magnesium alloy body (better quality and environmental seal)
- Bigger body balances longer lens better
- Use CF Card (an advantage if you primarily own CF cards)
- Approx. $100 cheaper
- Lens micro adjustment
Canon 60D has plenty of advantages over Canon 50D however, it does not beat 50D in term of fast continuous shooting speed and built quality. Therefore, if you are looking for better camera for sports or photojournalism, you’ll better of by getting 50D or 7D, but if you are looking for a better camera than Canon Rebel lines (450D (XSi), 500D (T1i), and 550D (T2i), with movie recording capability, then Canon 60D is a great choice.
