Pentax K-r new midrange camera and 35mm prime lens announced!

by Enche Tjin on September 10, 2010

Pentax, k-r, a mid size DSLR camera finally announced with Pentax new Pentax 35mm f/2.4. Pentax K-r is positioned between Pentax flagship K-7 and beginner DSLR Pentax K-x.

What is special about K-r?
At a glance, it looks like Pentax best selling DSLR camera Pentax K-x, but it is actually a bit bigger than K-x. K-r inherits Pentax K-7 SAFOX IX auto focus system, 3″ inch hi-res lcd monitor and PRIME II processor. K-r shoots up to 6 frames per second, built-in image stabilization, new 12 MP resolution optimized for low light. ISO could be expanded up to 25600. Following the success of colorful Pentax K-x, K-r is available in three colors: Black, White and Red. Overall, it is a solid camera for amateur/enthusiasts.

Pentax 35mm f/2.4 lens
At the same time, Pentax also announces lightweight, all plastic construction, low cost Pentax 35mm f/2.4 lens. This lens will give approx. 52.5 mm view (equivalent 35mm full frame camera). Pentax follows the success of Nikon 35mm f/1.8 and Sony. Unfortunately, the lens is all plastic (including the mount) and the maximum aperture it a bit disappointing. However, it comes with many colors (probably in Japan only) to suit your camera colors.

Pentax K-r outlook
Overall, K-r is a very solid mid-range camera designed for amateur and enthusiasts. It is a great upgrade from Pentax k-x or older Pentax beginner cameras such as Pentax K200d.

Last year, I am very enthusiasts about Pentax k-x release. But this year, I am not as enthusiast compare to last year because there are also some solid mid-range DSLR cameras that will compete directly with the K-r. Regardless, Pentax K-r provides great bang for your bucks compare to other brand mid-range cameras out in the market.
