Black and White: From snapshot to great shot – Book Review

by Enche Tjin on January 10, 2012

The book By John Batdorff discusses how to create a successful and appealing Black and white photos. In this digital era, we have color image sensor. As a result, mastering B&W post processing / after capture images are essential.

bw-snapshot-great-shotAbout half of the book discusses about gears, basic photography such as exposures, white balance, composition, portrait, etc, and half of the book discusses about the post processing workflow. John uses Adobe Photoshop Lightroom to manages his photos and use Nik’s Silver Efex Pro to post process his color images into black and white images.

He uses and discusses two of the software, espescially Nik’s Silver Efex Pro quite extensively from the interface to features.

The book is easy to read and understand and geared towards beginners. For more intermediate or advanced black and white shooters that hasn’t use Lightroom or Silver Efex, this book might provide a good guide. For photographers who already established their own workflow by using aperture or Adobe Photoshop Creative Suite, this book might not be ideal.

There are plenty of beautiful B&W photos in the book, especially landscape which is the author’s favorite. There are some basic explanation about portrait photography too. I like the “Poring over picture” pages, where the author give some information about gears to use and post processing techniques he employs in developing the photo.

Overall, this is a good book for beginners who want to capture and process Black & White photos using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and Nik’s Silver Efex Pro.
