Up to today, Canon is the only prominent camera manufacturer that does not has any mirrorless camera system line up (compact system camera). Sony has NEX, Nikon has Nikon 1, Fuji has X-PRO, Samsung has NX, Olympus and Panasonic has M43, and even Pentax has Pentax Q.
Canon thinks that consumers generally does not want the hassle of changing lenses. But they want to have camera with large image sensor so that they can record better image quality. Canon G1x is the answer for those group of consumers.
Canon G1X is about the same size as popular Canon G series (G12) which has about 6 times smaller image sensor. Canon G1x will have 18.7 x 14mm sensor, which is a bit bigger than four thirds system sensor (17.3 x 13mm) but smaller than Canon APS-C sensor (found in Canon DSLR cameras, 22.2 x 14.8mm). G1X will have crop factor of approx 1.8x.
A relatively large sensor means it is better to gather light (great in dark condition) and it is better to capture details, dynamic range and create a shallow depth of field (blur the background). But larger image sensor means higher price tag. G1X will be sold at approx $799, about the same price as beginner DSLR camera with kit lens.
Canon G1X will have 28-112mm f/2.8-5.8 (full frame equivalent) zoom lens, which is a bit shorter than G12 (28-140mm). Like G12, G1X also has swiveling LCD screen, two command dials (like those of DSLR cameras), and an optical viewfinder.
Overall, Canon G1X is a great advanced camera for lightweight travel and holiday.
