Canon 5D mk III is coming

by Enche Tjin on February 27, 2012

Canon Rumor site reported that Canon 5D mark 3 is coming soon announced on 2nd March 2012. According to the rumor, 5D mk 3 have “only” 22. MP, which only increase a bit compared to mark 2 (21 MP). However, it will get much improved auto focus system with 61 points AF. We don’t know how many will be cross type (more sensitive) auto focus points yet. But I am pretty sure it will be much improved from its predecessor 9 points (center cross type), which allow mk3 to take on action photography.

The spec is not as great on paper compared to Nikon D800 which has 36 MP. Usually, Canon has bigger resolution sensor. This year, Canon is quite conservative about rising image resolution. Like 1DX, Canon opts to improve on image quality in high ISO and speed. These two features are Canon weaknesses compared to Nikon D700 and D3S.

Beside that important improvement, 5D mark 3 also will have 100% viewfinder coverage, slightly larger LCD screen and dual CF/SD card slot. This camera is targeted for professionals or enthusiasts who want a lighter and more affordable cameras.

Here is the leaked spec

  • 22mp
  • 61pt AF (41 cross type)
  • 6 fps continuous shooting
  • ISO 100-25600 expandable to 50 & 1024000
  • 100% VF
  • 3.2″ LCD
  • 150000 shutter reliability
  • Dual CF/SD Card Slots
  • Water and dust resistant
  • Price: Around $3500 USD

Have to start saving now, but it will be a choice between a holiday in Europe for a few weeks or the new 5D III. What to do?

Seems like you have 7D, that is a very capable camera. I think getting great travel experience is better than spending lot of money on gears (except you really need it for pro work). Anyway, I’ll recommend you to get the vacation :)
