New camera lenses in 2012

by Enche Tjin on February 15, 2012

There are many lenses expected to be available this 2012. Some companies has revealed its lens roadmap. These are some of them. Please let me know if I missed  any.

Popular pro workhorse Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 will be replaced by Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 II. The later lens produces sharper images with less chromatic abberation and ghosting effects. The new coating resists fingerprints. The new lens will use 82mm filter instead of 77mm. The new lens is 150 g lighter and a bit shorter.

Unfortunately, the price is $1000 more expensive. It will be selling at $2300.  Many will resent that this new version has no image stabilization and command a high price. On the same time, Tamron just releases 24-70mm f/2.8 with image stabilization.

Canon also releases two new EF prime lenses with image stabilization: Canon 24mm f/2.8 IS and 28mm f/2.8 IS. Both of the lens might be popular for street photography, and backup lenses for pro photographers. Unfortunately, the addition of IS raise the price substantially. The 24mm price is $850 and 28mm’s is $800.

Nikon releases the new Nikon 85mm f/1.8G, replacing the old AF-D model. The new one will cost $499 and will be compatible with all Nikon DSLR cameras, including D3100 and D5100.

Sony is releasing new lens roadmap. Sony NEX system will get the priority and will have at least three more lens this year: two zooms and one large aperture prime lens.

For DSLR / SLT camera shooters, Sony announces their longest telephoto lens in G series, the 500mm f/4 which is designed for wildlife and pro sports photography.

Olympus shows two high quality lenses for micro four thirds system: 75mm f/1.8 which will be a great candid / portrait lens, and 60mm f/2.8 Macro lens. The macro lens is weather sealed and will be best with Olympus newly announced E-M5.

Pentax promised four new lenses. One is 40mm f/2.8 XS lens dedicated for new K01. Three more lenses are DA standard prime, Pentax high magnification zoom, and a super telephoto prime. The rest can be read here.

Tokina has shows 70-200mm f/4 stabilized lens. This will provide competition for Canon 70-200mm f/4 IS and a great alternative lens for Nikon DSLR (which does not has f/4 version).
