Leica M Monochrom – First digital B&W camera!

by Enche Tjin on May 12, 2012

Leica M Monochrom is the first full frame digital camera that has black and white sensor. It can’t see colors, so it only captures luminance values. Designwise, Leica M Monochrom is identical with Leica M9, which is a rangefinder design. Having a true Black and White sensor, Leica M Monochrom will have advantage on sharpness and dynamic range. This camera will be great for people that has a great passion for black and white photography such as street photographers.

Here’s the Leica M Monochrom spec and price

  • 18 MP CCD full frame 35mm sensor
  • 2.5 inch LCD screen with 230k dots
  • Native ISO 320-10000
  • Price: $7999 body only

The problem for photographers/hobbyists is the price is set very high, so only feww people  can afford to buy it. Hopefully, other manufacturers such as Panasonic sees B&W sensor potential and decided to make one with mass market price.
