Canon T4i or 650D is continuation of successful rebel series. 650D IS improved in several areas compared to the Canon T3i & T2i such as better af system (9 cross type af points). It shoot 5 fps. T4i also has advanced 63 metering system that 7D and 5D mark3 has.
This improvement makes the camera very close to Canon 60D spec. However the 650D is not weather sealed and doesnt have top LCD and dual dials.
To be competitive in the market, Canon needs to add something new and meaningful. As an entry level camera whose users are usually beginners, canon develops touchscreen interface which increase user friendliness.
Video shooters will be grateful because Canon develops an hybrid AF in live view mode, which hopefully not only able to focus faster but also able to focus continuously as the subject moves.
Also announced is Canon 18-135mm STM lens, which is a great complement to the camera. STM (stepper motor) means the lens has silent autofocus which is good for video work. It also has dynamic Image Stabilization optimized for video shooting. Canon also announces Canon 40mm f/2.8 pancake lens. This lens is tiny and has STM technology on it.
The STM lens is not as fast as USM (ultrasonic motor) lens, so it might not great for sports/action photography.
The pressure is on for Canon to produce the best camera and lenses possible to compete with many other camera system that aimed toward beginners and amateur videographers and Canon T4i might be the answer. In conclusion, it is a good DSLR camera for either stills or videography.
